Kupwara :- A complete shutdown was observed in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday against the 1994 massacre in which 27 civilians were killed in alleged army firing.

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown in the town which was supported by local traders’ bodies.

On 27 January 1994, the army allegedly massacred 27 people in Kupwara town.

An eye witness said people offered congregational Fateh-a-Khawani for the martyrs at different places including Mazar-e Shuhada at Regipora in Kupwara.

All shops and other business establishments in these areas remained closed while public transport were off the roads.

Meanwhile, forces personnel were deployed in strength to prevent any protest march by the people.
