ROME, Jun 10 : European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and political leaders from several countries have extended their greetings to Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest continuously serving elected prime minister.

Modi, who was elected to the office in 2014, reached the milestone on Wednesday, with an unbroken tenure of 4,399 days - surpassing India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Others who greeted Modi include Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung, Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Sri Lankan President Aruna Kumara Dissanayake, former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and leaders from several African countries.

Several political leaders from the US and countries like Nepal and Mongolia also shared posts congratulating the Indian prime minister.

The EU Commission president praised Modi's leadership and highlighted India's partnership with the region.

"With you, India not only landed on the moon, it is shooting for the stars," she said in a social media post on Wednesday. "From our cooperation on technology, mobility, security and defence all the way to the mother of all trade deals. Thank you for all that we have achieved together."
