PARIS, July 23: French legislation will be toughened with regard to penalties for interfering in elections on behalf of other countries, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.

"The bill I presented to the Council of Ministers this morning increases the sentence from one year to three years in prison, and the fine from 15,000 euros to 45,000 euros [$51,300]," Nunez told reporters on Wednesday.

Nunez added that he is also planning to create an independent commission tasked with informing the public about cases of foreign interference in the electoral process.

The presidential election in France will be held on April 18, 2027, with a runoff scheduled for May 2, if necessary.

Incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron will not be able to participate in the election, as he is already serving his second consecutive term.
