After surrendering the T20I series 4-1, India also ended on the losing side in the ODI leg as England clinched the three-match series 2-1 with a 27-run victory at Lord's on Sunday. Chasing a daunting 388, India finished on 360/7 despite a sensational 138 from Rohit Sharma and valuable contributions from Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74).
The defeat came after England piled up 387/3, powered by centuries worth of impact from Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell before Joe Root and Jos Buttler delivered the finishing flourish. The hosts scored at 7.74 runs per over, while India replied at 7.20, but a late collapse proved costly after the visitors had looked firmly in the chase for nearly 40 overs.
England's top order lays the platform before late assault
England's innings revolved around a commanding 192-run opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell in just 30.1 overs. Duckett struck 141 off 135 balls with 18 fours and a six, while Bethell made 91 from 93 deliveries, hitting 11 boundaries and two sixes. England reached 58 without loss in the first powerplay before adding another 203 runs during the middle phase.
Duckett brought up his century in 108 balls, whereas Bethell reached his fifty in only 51 deliveries. After Bethell's dismissal, Joe Root accelerated brilliantly, remaining unbeaten on 74 from just 48 balls at a strike rate of 154.16. Jos Buttler then provided the final surge with an unbeaten 41 off only 13 balls, smashing four fours and three sixes at a staggering strike rate of 315.38.
England collected 126 runs in the final powerplay alone, finishing with 387/3. Prasidh Krishna was India's most successful bowler with 2/69, while Prince Yadav picked up the other wicket but conceded 79 runs.
A tale of two innings—the Rohit Sharma phase and post Rohit Sharma phase
India's chase was built on Rohit Sharma's magnificent 138 off 110 balls, featuring 17 fours and five sixes. Alongside Shubman Gill, he added 147 for the opening wicket before stitching another century partnership with Virat Kohli. Rohit reached his hundred in only 84 balls as India crossed 200 in the 31st over and 250 by the end of the 38th.
However, once Jacob Bethell dismissed Rohit at 260/2 in the 39th over, the chase unraveled. India lost five wickets for just 69 runs, slipping from 260/2 to 329/7. Sam Curran triggered the collapse with outstanding figures of 4/75, dismissing Kohli, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel.
Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid chipped in with one wicket each, while Bethell also claimed Rohit's prized scalp. Late hitting from Gurnoor Brar (18*) and Arshdeep Singh (15* off 6) reduced the margin, but England comfortably sealed both the match and the ODI series.
