Nepal Tragedy: Is it Fair to Consider it Merely a Natural Disaster?

The recent horrific tragedy in Nepal has drawn the world’s attention, once again raising serious questions about the vulnerability of the Himalayan region and the direction of human development. It may be easy to move on by calling events like floods, landslides, glacier bursts, and sudden debris flows a "natural disaster." But is it fair to consider the immense loss of life and property caused by this tragedy as merely a natural calamity? Perhaps not.
This event offers an opportunity to recognize nature's changing dynamics and re-examine the combined impacts of climate change, environmental imbalance, and growing human interference in the Himalayas.
The Himalayan region is one of the most geologically active mountain systems in the world. Its geography naturally makes it prone to landslides, earthquakes, floods, and avalanches. Despite this, local communities have coexisted with nature for centuries. The problem deepens when natural fragility is ignored in favor of unnatural human activities and infrastructural pressure.
The situation in Nepal needs to be viewed within this broader context. Changes in glaciers and glacial lakes, rising global temperatures, extreme downpours, unplanned settlements on mountain slopes, and uncontrolled tourism multiply these risks manifold. While attributing a single event solely to climate change may not be scientifically accurate, ignoring the changing climate and the shifts within the Himalayan ecosystem is equally unjustified.
The most concerning aspect of this tragedy is that even in the age of the information revolution, such events cause massive, unexpected damage. The flow of debris from a glacier burst or glacial lake outburst is far more rapid and destructive than a standard flood. A massive torrent of water, ice, rocks, soil, and debris surges downstream, destroying settlements, roads, and bridges in its path. Under such circumstances, even a few minutes or hours of advance warning could save thousands of lives and property.
The question is not just how such a destructive natural event occurred, but also why and how we permitted unplanned construction in vulnerable areas, and why timely information could not be obtained.
Development
-roads, hospitals, schools, communication networks, and electricity-is essential in mountainous regions. However, if carried out without considering the ecological carrying capacity of the Himalayas, this development becomes the cause of disaster. Encroaching on natural riverbeds, unscientific road construction on unstable slopes, multi-story hotels, and large projects executed without Environmental Impact Assessments transform natural events into human tragedies.
Therefore, it is essential to distinguish between a natural disaster and a man-made tragedy. A landslide may be a natural process, but if unplanned construction puts people in harm's way, the role of human decisions in amplifying its destructive impact cannot be denied.
This event is also a stern warning for India. States like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, as well as Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, share this fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Past tragedies in Kedarnath and Chamoli have already proven how destructive the combination of heavy rainfall and human intervention can be. Expressing sympathy or sending relief materials to Nepal is not enough; India must learn from this event and take proactive measures within its own borders.
Today, advanced science,including satellite surveillance, remote sensing, drones, weather forecasting, and AI-driven analysis
-makes real-time monitoring of vulnerable areas possible. Furthermore, rapid cross-border sharing of disaster information between India and Nepal is essential, as rivers and glaciers do not recognize political boundaries.
We must realize that developing mountains on the pattern of the plains is a dangerous gamble. Mountain development should not mean unchecked construction, but ensuring maximum human safety with minimal environmental damage.
Disaster management cannot be limited to distributing relief supplies; it must begin with early risk identification, strict regulation of construction, local community training, and scientific planning. Governments cannot evade administrative accountability by simply blaming nature. True wisdom lies in shedding the arrogance of attempting to conquer nature, listening to its signals, and shaping development policies accordingly.
