During my recent visit to the historic City of London, I found myself reflecting not only on its remarkable past but also on the lessons it offers for the future of higher education. The City of London is unique. It is older than the United Kingdom itself, with a history stretching back nearly two millennia. From Roman settlements to becoming the world’s leading financial centre, the City has witnessed empires rise and fall, technological revolutions unfold, and global economies transform. Yet, through every era, it has remained relevant. This ability to preserve heritage while embracing change is perhaps its greatest strength. As I walked through the streets surrounding Guildhall and the financial district, I was reminded that enduring institutions are not built merely on infrastructure, wealth, or reputation. They are built on vision, adaptability, governance, and an unwavering commitment to serving society. For universities, this lesson is particularly relevant. Higher education today stands
at a transformative moment. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries. Newage skills are becoming as important as traditional qualifications. Employers are increasingly seeking graduates who can innovate, solve problems, collaborate globally, and adapt continuously. In such a landscape, universities cannot remain static.
The institutions that will lead the future are those that combine academic excellence with employability, research with innovation, technology with human values, and local relevance with global engagement. At Desh Bhagat University, we believe that education must extend beyond classrooms and degrees. Our focus is on creating future-ready graduates through experiential learning, international collaborations, industry partnerships, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and skill development. The objective is not merely to prepare students for their first job but to prepare them for lifelong success. The City of London itself serves as a living example of this philosophy. It has reinvented itself repeatedly while remaining rooted in its core values. It continues to attract global talent, foster innovation, and influence economies worldwide because it understands that progress requires continuous evolution. Universities must adopt the same mindset. The future belongs to institutions that are willing to learn, adapt, collaborate, and innovate. It belongs to those that embrace emerging technologies while preserving the timeless values of knowledge, integrity, and service. It belongs to those that prepare students not just to participate in the future but to lead it. My visit to the City of London reinforced a simple but powerful belief: great institutions are not defined by their age. They are defined by their ability to remain erelevant across generations. As educators and institutional leaders, our responsibility is to build universities that inspire, innovate, and create impact—not only for today, but for decades to come. The journey of higher education must be one of continuous transformation, guided by purpose and driven by a commitment to shaping a better future for society.
