BEIJING, July 16 : China on Thursday voiced strong opposition to any potential US military action against Cuba after reports emerged that the US Department of War is considering a range of military options, including an army-led air assault involving thousands of troops.

"We have noted the relevant reports. The use of, or threat of, force in international relations seriously violates the UN Charter and undermines global and regional peace and security," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

"China firmly opposes such actions," Lin said.

Referring to a UN General Assembly vote in which 136 countries supported discussions on U.S. sanctions against Cuba, Lin said Washington should immediately end its military threats and all forms of blockade against the island nation.

"The United States needs to stop its military threats and any form of blockade against Cuba," he said.

Lin added that China would continue to support Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and resisting external interference. He said the General Assembly vote demonstrated "extensive international support" for Cuba and reflected a "just call for ending the blockade."
