KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Normalcy returned to southern Nepal's Madhesh and Koshi provinces on Monday as the law and order situation improved following days of communal violence in the region bordering India.
The communal violence erupted in Koshi's Sunsari district bordering India after members of two communities, which were holding separate programmes, clashed over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags on July 26. Three people were killed in the clashes, which soon spread to neighbouring areas.
As the situation improved over the last few days, curfews and prohibitory orders issued as a precautionary measure following the violence were relaxed.
In Dhanusha district of Madhesh province, prohibitory orders imposed since Saturday morning were removed effective from Monday at 5 am, as various agitating groups withdrew their protest programme, Chief District Officer Prem Prasad Luitel said in a notice.
Curfew was also relaxed in the Golbazaar area of Madhesh province's Siraha district from Sunday at 7 pm, according to a notice issued by the District Administration Office.
In the province's Saptari district and Lahan municipality, curfew was removed on Saturday as the security situation returned to normal.
Meanwhile, a high security alert was sounded at the Nepal-India border point in the Nepalgunj area of Lumbini province as a precaution following the violence. (PTI)
