WASHINGTON, Aug 7: US President Donald Trump signed on Thursday two executive orders, aimed at narrowing birthright citizenship and ending so-called "birth tourism" in the United States, the broadcast showed.
Axios reported that the orders would apply only to future births in four specific categories:
- Children born in the United States to foreign diplomats serving another government.
- Children born to individuals designated as alien enemies, including members of federally recognised terrorist organisations.
- Children born in U.S. territories, if Congress enacts legislation ending automatic citizenship in those territories.
- Children born to mothers who intentionally travel to the United States for the sole purpose of giving birth, particularly through birth tourism centres.
On June 30, the US Supreme Court blocked Trump's initiative to repeal universal citizenship rights for children born in the US. Following this, the US Department of Justice warned that arriving in the US on a tourist visa for the sole purpose of giving birth violates federal law. Authorities promised to prosecute those who orchestrate such schemes.
