SRINAGAR, Aug 9: Police today conducted coordinated searches at 26 locations across Police District Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district in connection with an ongoing investigation into a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against the banned Jamaat-e-Islami.
A police spokesperson said the searches were carried out at residential and other premises linked to JeI leaders, members and activists in different areas of the district, "Searches were conducted in accordance with due legal procedure and prescribed protocols," the spokesperson said.
During the searches, police recovered and seized documents, literature and electronic devices from several premises, according to the spokesperson. "The seized material is being examined to determine possible links and activities connected with the proscribed organization," the spokesperson said.
He said the searches were part of police efforts to act against networks associated with proscribed organizations and separatist activities. "Police remain committed to maintaining peace and security and will take action in accordance with law against individuals or organizations found involved in unlawful activities," the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Police today secured an order from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court to attach property worth Rs 69.82 lakh belonging to an accused in a 2008 militancy-linked case in Sopore area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district, while also obtaining an arrest warrant against another accused.
A Police spokesperson said the action was taken in connection with FIR No. 02/2008 registered at Police Station Chandoosa under Sections 2/3 of the EIMCO Act, Sections 120-B and 121 of the RPC and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The attachment order concerns 12 kanal, 1 marla and 73 square feet of land belonging to accused Parvaiz Ahmad Famda, son of Yaar Mohammad Famda, a resident of Kawhar Bala in Chandoosa, the spokesperson said.
The property has been valued at Rs 69,82,550, and the requisite valuation certificate has also been obtained, police said.
In a related development in the same case, the police spokesperson said the NIA Court, Sopore, had also issued an arrest warrant against another accused, Abdul Rashid Bhat, son of Abdul Ahad Bhat, a resident of Rajpora, Chandoosa. "Baramulla Police remain committed to pursuing individuals involved in unlawful and anti-national activities and ensuring that legal proceedings are taken to their logical conclusion in accordance with law," the spokesperson said.
